Meet Josephine McAfee: Intern, World Traveler, Future Builder

Josephine McAfee, Venn construction intern

Some people enter the construction industry through their education. Josephine McAfee? She was practically born into it.

With both parents in the industry, it’s no surprise she gravitated toward the job sites and structure early on. But what makes her stand out isn’t just her background—it’s her mix of curiosity, discipline, and a surprisingly adventurous passport.

We sat down with Josephine for a quick Q&A to get to know her better:

What’s something interesting about you that’s not on your resume?

One of the most interesting things about me is my love for travel. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit 4 of the 7 Wonders of the World: the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, the Colosseum in Rome, and Petra in Jordan.

Where do you go to school, and what are you studying?

I am currently an incoming sophomore at Northern Arizona University (NAU), pursuing a major in Construction Management. In addition, I’m working toward a double minor in Business and French.

  1. What drew you to the construction industry in the first place?

What sparked your interest in construction in the first place?

My interest in construction developed from my parents. Both of my parents work in the industry, so I’ve been exposed to it from a young age. While I initially considered engineering, I realized that Construction Management offered a more dynamic and hands-on approach.

Are there any projects you’re especially proud of?

During my first semester, I took a course titled Computing in Construction, where I learned how to use industry-standard tools like Excel, Microsoft Project, Bluebeam, and Revit. Our final project involved designing and modeling an entire residential house using Revit. It was a challenging task that required weeks of work, but seeing the final product come together was incredibly rewarding.

What’s something you’re hoping to learn during your internship?

One of my main goals during this internship is to build a stronger understanding of construction specific knowledge by studying under knowledgeable superintendents who have years of experience. Gaining this practical knowledge will enhance my ability to contribute meaningfully on job sites and in future roles.

If you could design and build your dream building, what would it be?

If I had the opportunity to design and construct my dream building, it would be an ultra-luxurious nightclub located in Milan, Italy.

Go to study habit or productivity hack?

My most effective productivity habit is tackling assignments immediately after they’re assigned. I’ve learned that if I postpone them, I tend to procrastinate and end up working under pressure. By starting right away, I stay ahead of deadlines and reduce stress. When studying, I rely on handwritten flashcards and start preparing at least three days before exams.

What are you into outside of school and work?

Outside of academics and work, I enjoy outdoor activities. I love hiking, backpacking, and camping whenever I get the chance. More recently, I’ve started exploring off-roading.

At Venn, we’re all about building what’s next—and that includes the people. We’re proud to partner with top programs like NAU and ASU to help grow the future of construction in Arizona. Our world-class intern program, led by Dana Payton, gives students like Josephine a front-row seat to real projects, real challenges, and real mentorship. Because great builders don’t just show up—they’re developed.
